Dressmaker Fabrics & Patterns
Fabric, pattern placement and finishing details all affect the character of a dress. Use this guide to make deliberate choices and keep the edition you are playing in mind.
Start with the commission or idea
Before choosing a fabric, decide what the dress is meant to communicate. In a commission, read the customer’s request and any visible style requirements first. In free design, pick a mood, occasion or color direction for yourself. Keeping one clear idea in mind makes it easier to choose a silhouette and avoid adding details that compete with one another.
Explore the available fabrics
The official Steam description lists fabrics including cotton, linen, wool, silk and velvet. The range gives you different colors and surface looks to explore. The game’s own fabric labels and commission screen are the authority for the build you are playing; this guide does not assign hidden quality values or claim one material is always best.
- Compare swatches in the design view before committing to a full garment.
- Check whether a print or color supports the customer’s stated style.
- Consider the whole outfit, not just one panel. A striking fabric can look different once several pieces are assembled.
- When a brief specifies a material, color or style, treat the visible requirement as more important than a general suggestion.
Place pattern pieces with care
Dressmaker’s official store description says the way you arrange and cut pattern pieces is reflected in the finished dress, including whether fabric is aligned to the grain or cut on the bias. Take a moment to inspect the layout before cutting, especially when the fabric has a directional print or you want neighboring panels to feel intentional.
- Look over every piece before cutting and make sure the layout matches the design you have in mind.
- Check the grain or direction indicator in the build you are playing.
- Review how the print or color will sit across the garment panels.
- After cutting, use the mannequin preview if the edition provides it to spot a combination you want to change.
Use finishing details to support the design
Buttons, bows, appliqué and lace are among the decoration options described on the Steam store page. A useful starting point is to choose one detail that reinforces the dress’s main idea. If the customer has a visible request, check that it is met before adding optional trim.
There is no single finish that works for every commission. Try a combination, inspect the full dress, and change it if the detail draws attention away from the silhouette or print.
A quick pre-cut checklist
- Have I read the whole request and its stated constraints?
- Does this fabric fit the color or style I want?
- Are all pattern pieces placed the way I intend?
- Have I checked the grain or print direction shown by my game?
- Do I want to keep this layout before making a cut?
For a private place to record requirements and the values you observe, use the Dressmaker commission checker. It compares your entries only; it does not read game screens or calculate hidden scoring formulas.
